Building Commissioner Overview

If you are planning any construction or remodeling projects on a property you own within the corporate boundaries of the Town of Knightstown. In that case, we suggest that you contact the local authority at the number or address provided below to see if a permit may be required, obtain an Improvement Location Permit Application, and possibly receive some guidelines to help accomplish the work safely and according to the Local and State Building Codes.

The Building Commissioner and Town Zoning Administrator regulates all issues pertaining to any land uses in the corporate boundaries of the Town of Knightstown, that includes:

LOCAL PERMITING through the Improvement Location Application for everything from opening a New Business in an existing building, to any new Commercial Business, Home or Accessory Building to be built on a parcel of land within the Town’s Jurisdiction. Local Permits are also required for any Alterations to an existing structure, Fence Installs, HVAC Systems, Electrical, and any Plumbing, water, or sewer updates. New roofs, Siding, Windows, home additions, inside remodeling projects, driveways, sidewalks, and porches. Local permits need to be issued for the DEMOLITION of any structure presently on a local parcel of land within the Town’s Jurisdiction.

ALL INSPECTIONS, & CODE ENFORCEMENT–Conducting Inspections of safe and unsafe structures and properties to determine compliance with the Town Ordinances in place approved and granted by the Plan Commission, Board of Zoning Appeals, and the Town Council. Scheduling and organizing Inspections for Permits Issued as work progresses and following guidelines of any Construction Design Release provided by the State of Indiana.

ZONING ORDINANCE, Coordination & Enforcement of the Zoning Map guidelines and Ordinance requirements for all parcels of land within the Planning Commission’s Jurisdiction.

ZONING ADMINISTRATOR is responsible for the submission of any New 911 Address within the Town’s Jurisdiction. The final approval of any new address is by the Henry County 911 Director and our Local Post Office Personnel.

ZONING ADMINISTRATOR assists with any applications to the Planning Commission for Zoning or Ordinance possible changes and with scheduling any Hearings or Meetings on the subject with the Town Office Supervisor. The Administrator also assists with applications to the Board of Zoning Appeals for any possible variances of use or variances of development standards needed for a particular Zoning District within the Town’s Jurisdiction. The Administrator and Building Commissioner assists with the Development Planning of any new major construction project within the Town’s Jurisdiction by arranging and organizing a Technical Review Committee Board consisting of all Town Department Supervisors, the Town Engineer, Electrical Utility Engineer, and some members of the Town’s Planning Committee.
